May I remind you that you are a jerk?

What makes people do the things they do? Why do some people have endless patience when others have none?

At work the last 2 weeks we have had out busiest days of the year, both on the phone and in the shop and people just aren’t pleasant. Yes, I know they have to wait on hold or wait in line but that is just how it is. If they had pre-ordered like the smart people they wouldn’t need to do either of those things.
It just boggles my mind how some people think that yelling or abusing staff members is going to fix a problem and that they also think it is the staff members fault.

You didn’t order on time? You ordered 2 days after school went back? Oh and now it is my fault your kid doesn’t have any glue?

In the last 2 weeks staff have been sworn at, hung up on and threatened. And that is just the slightly unpleasant things. Other people have been hit (yes a customer HIT a staff member!) and had items thrown at them. Do these people just not think? What would they do if the situation was reversed? I’m sure they’d be wondering why some wanker is making their day even harder!

Have you after sworn at or abused someone at a shop? Or yelled at and hung up on on sales or tech support? How have you felt when you did that?

As someone that worked in a call centre as a supervisor for 5 years I’ve had my share of hang ups and abuse hurlers. The thing I found most amusing about these situations was that these people really expected that they’d get more help if they treated me that way. Just to let everyone out there know:
The ruder you are the less help you’ll get! In fact, when I’ve been in those situations I went out of my way just to make things worse… why? Because I could.

And the outcome? The customer was in the same predicament and I was left with a little smile.

  1. I like to think I'm a patient person but I doubt I could deal with customers like that. As a customer, though, I've never caused any trouble/inconvenience 😛

  2. Some people think it's acceptable to treat those in the customer service business that way. Usually, those people have never had to work a job like that or they'd know how horrible it is to have something thrown at you or have a customer scream at you over something so ridiculously trivial. It's kind of sad, really. I just don't understand how people can think that being so inconsiderate will get them what they want faster.

  3. I know exactly what you mean I'm much more willing to help out nice people then someone yelling at me. People need to remember that you can catch more bees with honey

  4. I don't understand why people are like that. We don't get that many rude customers where I work. But I remember getting a lot of complaints when I worked at the movie theater. They were mostly about the prices. It's like they thought that I made the prices up. Of course you get those people who realize it's not my fault and there's nothing I can do to help them.

  5. LMAO. I relate to this so much!!!

I love it when people are rude to me, and I get to anger them a little more! Its priceless! LOL

Being a manager I have to deal with a lot of crap, but you know what, I love arguing with customers!! Especially when they say "the customer is always right" well thats just crap! I am right, I am the one dealing with you, I am the one who makes the decision. You can't get away from what I decide. So go on, argue with me all you like, cause I love winding you up more!!!! LOL I can't say i have ever had anythign thrown at me, or been hit, but I am sure some people would love to hit me when I get going!! xxx
