Favourite finds of 2010

I’ve been able to find some great new things (online and offline) in 2010 that have kept me interested throughout the year. Here are 5 of my favourites:

1. Favourite new TV show: Modern Family
I think this might have started in 2009 but it wasn’t aired in Australia until 2010. This was actually a hard one to pick just one awesome TV show of 2010. I didn’t think it would happen, Lost finished up and I thought that might be the end of the TV world as I know it. Then there was Modern Family, what a smart and hilarious show! I want to be a Dunphy yo! I hope it just gets better and better.

2. Favourite blogger: Rose
I was really lucky that one day Rose commented on my blog. I love her posts be them corny or heartfelt or informative (even though I don’t understand much of the tutorials… but that is because I’m lazy) they are all great. I can’t wait till my reader pops up telling me there is a new post over at lifeasrose. Her layouts are also super awesome!

3. Favourite new Forum: JoltMB
This is an awesome and incredibly active forum. The members are really nice and they are actually in my age group! Well, mostly, I might be on the older edge of that but it is nice going to a forum where the majority of the members are older than 17 and understand how tough it can be to pay rent and bills.
Jolt also has this great stamp TCG which the admins put a heap of effort into making sure it is always fresh and fun. It is the first time I’ve ever seen something like this at a forum.
Oh and the neat thing? They’re having a double coins day on the 29th Dec! So hurry up and join! Oh, and tell them Kalliste sent you.

4. Favourite new drink: Watermelon Gatorade
I know you might not think this is important but let me correct you, IT IS! This might be the most awesomest drink ever. It actually tastes like watermelon rather than watermelon flavouring! My local shops is the only place I can find it and it sometimes goes for $4 for 600ml so I wait for them to put it on special ($2) and then buy like 10 bottles!! And drink them all in a week. It is all sorts of delicious.

5. Favourite author: Jane Austen
So I know she isn’t new to 2010 but she is new to me for 2010. I’ve never been one to read the classics but after watching Lost in Austen I decided to give it a shot. I just had to know what the big deal was about Darcy. Once I got past all of them language barriers it has been a lovely read. I’m hoping to build up my collection.

So there you have it, the standard and weird. You better go try that Gatorade and now! But first, let me know what new finds you have enjoyed in 2010.

On my last post it was mentioned how people generally wouldn’t want to do the graveyard shift in an office by themselves because it is scary. Overall, I’ve really liked this shift and kind of like that there is no one else in the office at the same time as me. It is peaceful and I don’t have to worry about who will bother me today. All in all, bliss. Well, except today… 3hrs in and I am fading already… only 5 hours to go!

So, I am able to get a bus in on this shift and the strange thing I have noticed is that my local bus has had middle aged women driving it each night. Now, I will happily walk the 20mins home at 12:30am in the dark and I will also wait at the bus interchange at 10:50pm waiting on my bus but I’m not sure I would be willing to drive a bus around the suburbs near my house without someone else around. It is strange to me that the bus company puts women on these routes at this time without any support. I wonder how much they think about it everytime they make a stop. What are the odds that this person may be the one to pull a knife or threaten them?

Heres hoping they never know the answer to that question.

Currently, on the graveyard shift, I am alone in the office much of the time. That is, up until the person before me leaves at midnight and the 8am starter gets in, I am alone in the dark in a 4 storey office building. Did I mention it has been storming for the entire time I’ve been doing this shift? It is the perfect setting for a thriller movie. There is even a fluro light that flashes.

On this shift I generally only have 2 sets of lights on. One in my office and one in the break room. There is also a small trail going to the front of the office. Earlier, I was walking back from the toilet (it is OUTSIDE the office, I have to go into the foyer just to go to the toilet! Each time I am scared the door won’t open for my pass and I’ll be standing out there with no shoes and only a security pass to my name) and as I walked into the main office I noticed a shady looking figure on the other side of the room out of the corner of my eye.

I tried to take a better look but I didn’t have my glasses and I had just put eye drops in and everything was a bit blurry. As my heart raced I wondered if it were an intruder, or was it a ghost, or was it something else?

I crept a little closer and as I inched my way over I noticed it was bright pink and was in fact sitting on a desk. What was it? It was a huge My Little Pony stuffed toy sitting on someones desk.

And I ask myself “Who the hell keeps oversized stuffed toys on their desk??”

I am currently in hour two of my second graveyard shift at work. Leading up to this shift I was dreading the hours as I can’t even remember the last time I was still awake at 5AM having not slept the night before. Back in my clubbing and heavy drinking days.. back in those long lost days of teenagehood. Up until recently, the idea of being awake at 2am was a foreign concept to me… perhaps I was becoming a bit of an old fogey.

So, you see what a shift this was going to be for me? Going to work at midnight!?! Yikes, what a world I live in now. I did it though and you know what? It was actually incredibly easy. It wasn’t until about 6:30 that I started feeling it and just wanted to be in bed but then my colleague who took over at 8AM brought me in some breakfast so it was kind of worthwhile

What things would you do on this type of shift so that you stay awake and occupied? Unfortunately tonight there is no milk! I was going to have a scheduled Hot Chocolate and later on a scheduled Chocolate Milk shake… luckily McDonalds is 24/7 around the corner and I got a shake from there.

Anyway, I think I am rambling so I will stop while I am ahead and hope you have some advise on keeping the boredom away.

Influence of the internet

Recently, working closer with the internet now, I’ve been seeing how the internet can so easily influence people. On a work level people are nearly brought to tears when their websites are down and we can’t get them back working immediately. Personally, I’ve seen people get so hurt or angry about what happens in forums or in comments and can’t help but laugh.

Yesterday, I had a reseller’s customer call because his domain was still expired and he’d paid the reseller to renew it for him. The reseller hadn’t done it as yet and in turn his customer ended up abusing me. Apparently, as the domain registrar it was my fault that his domain hadn’t been renewed and it was my fault that I wasn’t able to renew it for him. He told me that I absolutely would be renewing his domain and I would be doing it RIGHT NOW! This was his livelihood after all.

For everyone out there with a domain and hosting package, there is actually a lesson to learn from this. Never let your host register your domain for you in their name! Make sure you have full access to the domain should you ever want to move it somewhere else so that you don’t have to go through the hassle of getting it back.

On a personal level there is and, apparently, always will be internet/blog/forum dramas. Yes, drama llama’s exist everywhere on the internet! I know of a forum where occasionally the mods abuse their power. They, on occasion, feel as though they are better than the regular members and when the admin tells them off they start losing self confidence and deem themselves bad bad mods. Why do we take forums so seriously? Why can’t we just accept that other people will have different opinions from us and move on?

Is it a reflection of these peoples real lives? Do they only have power on the internet? Are they only in a clique online? I always wonder what these peoples lives are like off of the computer.

All in all, when did the internet become so important? When did we become unable to live without it? If you think about it, it wasn’t all that long ago when we lived our lives without even knowing what the internet was…

… granted, I know some people reading this were probably born in the late 90′s and probably have never lived without a computer or the internet or a mobile phone. Does this mean I’ve turned into one of those people that talks about how things were in their day?
